Test Details

The vitamin B12 test is a blood test that measures the amount of vitamin B12 in the blood. This vitamin is crucial for several vital functions in the body including DNA synthesis, supporting the nervous system, and red blood cell production. Deficiency may cause pernicious anemia, neurological disorders such as numbness and muscle weakness, and developmental delays in children. The test is used for early detection of deficiency, guiding appropriate treatment, and monitoring chronic cases.

The vitamin B12 test is requested to detect deficiency which may lead to anemia and neurological symptoms and to monitor patients receiving vitamin B12 supplements or those with conditions affecting vitamin absorption.
Causes of vitamin B12 deficiency include malabsorption due to stomach diseases such as atrophic gastritis or partial gastrectomy, dietary deficiency especially in strict vegetarians, intestinal diseases, and some medications affecting absorption.
Symptoms of vitamin B12 deficiency include fatigue, weakness, numbness and tingling in the limbs, coordination and balance disturbances, depression, or mood changes.
Causes of high vitamin B12 levels may result from excessive supplementation or diseases such as liver disease, kidney failure, and some cancers.
Factors affecting test results include recent supplement intake, certain chronic diseases, and changes in kidney and liver function.
Other tests related to vitamin B12 test include methylmalonic acid test, homocysteine test, and complete blood count to evaluate anemia.
