The thyroid is a small gland in the neck that plays a crucial role in regulating metabolism, growth, and energy in the body. The test measures the level of the stimulating hormone, which triggers the thyroid to produce its hormones, in addition to measuring the thyroid hormones themselves in their free form (not bound to blood proteins) to determine the active hormone level. These tests are used to diagnose hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism and to monitor treatment effectiveness in patients receiving thyroid therapy.
The stimulating hormone triggers thyroid hormone release and rises when thyroid hormones are low.
Free hormones are the active portion, while total includes protein-bound, so results may vary.
