Free Thyroxine (FT4) is the fraction of thyroxine circulating in the blood that is not bound to carrier proteins such as thyroxine-binding globulin (TBG). It reflects the amount of hormone available to enter body tissues and regulate metabolism and energy production. FT4 measurement is essential in evaluating thyroid function, diagnosing hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism, and monitoring patients on thyroid hormone therapy. Unlike Total T4, FT4 is not significantly affected by variations in binding proteins, making it a more accurate marker of thyroid status.
FT4 is the free (unbound) portion of the thyroid hormone thyroxine (T4) in the blood, and it represents the biologically active form.
