Test Details

PTH (Parathyroid Hormone) is a protein hormone produced by the parathyroid glands located behind the thyroid. It plays a critical role in maintaining normal blood calcium and phosphorus levels by acting on bones, kidneys, and intestines. When blood calcium levels drop, PTH secretion increases to: -Release calcium from bones -Increase calcium reabsorption in the kidneys while decreasing phosphorus excretion. -Activate vitamin D in the kidneys, PTH measurement is used to diagnose and monitor hyperparathyroidism or hypoparathyroidism and to assess causes of calcium and phosphorus imbalances.

Its main role is to maintain calcium and phosphorus within normal ranges.
When calcium drops, PTH secretion rises to release calcium from bones and increase its absorption in kidneys and intestines.
PTH stimulates bone resorption to release calcium into the blood.
It increases calcium reabsorption in the kidneys, reduces phosphorus excretion, and enhances intestinal calcium absorption via vitamin D activation.
PTH activates vitamin D in the kidneys, increasing calcium absorption from the intestines.
Clinically, it is measured to diagnose and monitor hyperparathyroidism, hypoparathyroidism, and calcium/phosphorus imbalances.
Hyperparathyroidism leads to elevated PTH and calcium; hypoparathyroidism leads to low PTH and low calcium.
It is essential for balancing calcium and phosphorus to maintain bone health and organ function.
