Test Details

Uric acid is a chemical compound formed from the breakdown of purines found in foods (like meat and legumes) and body cells. It is mainly eliminated through the kidneys in urine. High levels can cause gout and kidney stones, while low levels are uncommon and may be linked to liver or kidney disorders.

Causes of high uric acid: excessive intake of meat and legumes, obesity, kidney dysfunction, and certain drugs like diuretics.
Symptoms of high uric acid: joint pain especially in the big toe, swelling, redness, sometimes kidney stones.
Effect of diet: purine-rich foods (red meat, seafood) raise levels, while reducing them and cutting sugar helps lower it.
Relationship with gout: uric acid crystals deposit in joints causing severe pain and inflammation.
Causes of low uric acid: liver diseases, kidney disorders, malnutrition, or certain medications.
Long-term complications: chronic gout, kidney stones, and possible kidney failure if levels stay uncontrolled.
