Test Details

Kidney function tests include measuring various substances in the blood to evaluate how effectively the kidneys perform their essential roles. These tests assess creatinine and urea nitrogen to determine how well waste products are eliminated, and measure electrolytes such as sodium, potassium, chloride, phosphorus, total calcium, corrected calcium, along with albumin and uric acid to understand mineral and fluid balance in the body. Albumin reflects the kidney’s ability to retain proteins, while uric acid provides information on metabolic waste buildup. These findings are used to diagnose kidney impairment, monitor chronic disease, assess dehydration, identify electrolyte disorders, and evaluate medication effects on kidney function.

Elevated creatinine often indicates reduced kidney filtration and impaired clearance of waste products.
Abnormal sodium or potassium levels may reflect impaired kidney regulation of electrolytes and overall imbalance.
Urea increases when kidneys fail to eliminate nitrogenous wastes efficiently, making it a key indicator of excretory function.
Low albumin may indicate protein leakage through the kidneys, suggesting impaired filtration integrity.
High phosphorus commonly occurs in kidney disease because the kidneys cannot remove it effectively, impacting bone health.
Corrected calcium accounts for albumin levels, providing a more accurate assessment of true calcium status.
Elevated uric acid may signal poor kidney clearance or increased internal production, indicating metabolic or renal issues.
Dehydration concentrates the blood, causing creatinine and urea to rise falsely and mimic kidney dysfunction.
Electrolyte tests help assess how well the kidneys regulate fluids and identify states of dehydration or retention.
Some medications elevate creatinine or disturb electrolytes; these tests help evaluate their impact and guide safe monitoring.
