Homocysteine is an amino acid produced naturally in the body during the digestion of proteins. Normally, it is broken down and converted into other substances with the help of vitamins B6, B12, and folic acid. A deficiency in these vitamins, genetic disorders, or certain medical conditions can cause elevated homocysteine levels, which may increase the risk of arterial disease, blood clots, and nerve problems. The homocysteine test is used for early detection of these risks or for monitoring high-risk patients.
The homocysteine test is a blood test that measures the level of homocysteine in the blood. High levels may indicate an increased risk of cardiovascular disease or deficiencies in vitamins B12, B6, and folic acid.
