An incentive spirometer is a medical device used to help patients take deep breaths to expand their lungs and prevent complications such as pneumonia after surgery or illness. The three-ball design provides a visual guide for patients, with each ball corresponding to an inhalation flow rate (e.g., Red-600 ml/s, Yellow-900 ml/s, and Green-1200 ml/s). Regular use helps strengthen respiratory muscles, clear phlegm, and maintain lung capacity.
- Sit upright.
- Hold the spirometer in an upright position.
- Exhale normally.
- Place the mouthpiece in your mouth and seal your lips tightly around it.
- Inhale slowly and deeply, trying to lift all three balls and keep them suspended as long as possible.
- Remove the mouthpiece and hold your breath for at least 3-5 seconds.
- Exhale slowly.
- Repeat this process at least 10 times per hour while you are awake, or as instructed by a healthcare professional.
